SESSION 4A — The Convergence of Satellite & Terrestrial Networks for Training & Corporate Communications Applications

Session Overview: Ten years ago, the Internet seemed to be the long-awaited answer for all of our training technology requirements. Unfortunately, the panacea turned out not to be the complete answer, especially for national and global companies. Explore the new generation of IP via satellite technology, a hybrid answer to the challenge of multi-cast live and on-demand video content delivery and local distribution through LAN/WAN infrastructure. Hear case studies on retail, manufacturing and financial applications.
Speaker Background: Mr. Jepson has an extensive 19-year history in the Retail IT, Corporate Communications & Training technology sectors, as well as commercial broadcast and production experience. Mr. Jepson currently advises companies on satellite, web-based, and other technology applications across the U.S. and worldwide. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Brigham Young University’s School of Business. For the past 19 years, Mr. Lawrence has been working with government agencies and corporations delivering training and communications solutions. He currently consults with companies on how to leverage Internet Protocol in support these same applications. Mr. Lawrence graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Strayer University in Washington, DC.
SESSION 4B — Service Oriented Architecture (SOA): Reskilling & Training for a SOA
Tapas Banergee, CEO, Web Age Solutions
Session Overview: Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a way to combine all the software applications in the organization to create a new breed of software. Traditionally, applications such as e-commerce, accounting, and human resources have worked very well individually. SOA will help these applications to work with each other closely and unlock new value for the overall IT investment. In this presentation, we will explain in plain English what SOA is and how your organization can benefit from it. SOA will call for new roles and responsibilities within the company. We will discuss how you can create an effective SOA training plan for these roles.
Speaker Background: Tapas Banerjee, CEO at Web Age Solutions, has over 12 years of experience in architecting e-business solutions including work as a designer on the first e-commerce software developed at IBM. Since starting Web Age Solutions in 1999, Tapas has led the vision of Web Age Solutions in tracking the IT landscape in search of best practices to help Fortune 500 companies develop their strategic infrastructures. Prior to starting Web Age Solutions, Tapas served as an architect and manager at the IBM Toronto Lab where he was responsible for first the architecture of the IBM e-commerce engine and then developing the worldwide support infrastructure for the product. Tapas also spent some time at Cognos, serving as a development manager web-izing the Impromptu product line. Tapas received his M.S. in Electrical Engineering at the Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada.
SESSION 4C — How to Keep E-mail from Sinking You
Cathy Nairne, Manager, Learning Programs, Information Mapping, Inc.
Session Overview: E-mail is essential today for customer relations, sales, marketing, vendor relations, and internal communications, but it is also overwhelming organizations. Concise, effective e-mails improve organizational efficiency, bolster an organization s image, create customer loyalty, ensure compliance, and improve morale. This session will provide a proven strategy to keep employees from drowning in the e-mail deluge.
Speaker Background: Cathy Nairne, Manager of Learning Programs at Information Mapping, Inc., joined IMI in 1992 as an instructor after teaching at the secondary and post-secondary level and working as a product manager for Burroughs/Unisys. At IMI, she delivered both traditional and Web-based seminars, where she was the lead instructor. In 1995, Cathy began her present position where she leads a staff of 25 professionals and oversees the design and development of new seminars and products. She holds a Bachelors and Masters degree in Business Education and an Ed.S. degree in Adult-Leadership & Development.
Tom Fulton, President, Mentor Communications and Training, Inc.
Session Overview: Today’s computer professionals are part of the video game generation. Are you really surprised that you can’t understand their written or verbal communcations? This session is intended to give you a kick-start into a deeper understanding of what the heck they’re talking about! Covering pwned, gank, mad props, and troll among other terms, you will also learn the difference between a geek and a nerd (hint: you only want to hire geeks). Come to this session for fun, factoids and phat lewt, and release your inner geek!
Speaker Background: Tom Fulton is a geek and proud of it. His first development experience was with Coleco, designing video games. Currently, he makes a living developing course materials and teaching Java, C and C++ to developers. His children, age 8 and 10, keep him from getting old. His current motto is: "I am not a nerd, I am a Level 12 paladin."
SESSION 5B — A Seat at the Table – Making the Wish Come True
Murray Winland, Training Director – IT University, Progresssive Insurance
Session Overview: We’ve wished for it. We’ve asked for it. Maybe we’ve even prayed for it. Yet, many times, training doesn’t have a “seat at the table” with the senior management team and everyone suffers. In this session, you will learn about a creative, effective, and fun way to partner with your management team. You’ll discover how to help your senior management team share ownership for training inputs and outcomes. You will be better able to ferret out those things that really matter to your manager customers so that your training products and services are strategically aligned with helping them meet their organizational goals. And, you’ll find out how to help your customers recognize that training may not be the only (or best) solution to their performance needs.
Speaker Background: Murray Winland is the Training Director for IT University at Progressive Insurance where he and his team support over 3400 IT employees. He has a strong interest in training measurement and evaluation as well as corporate university models and approaches. He has presented on both topics at past ITTC conferences (2002 and 2003), the IQPC Conference, the Corporate University Conference, and the NETglobal Conference. Murray holds a M.Ed. degree in Adult Learning and Development.
